Why were you successful in the 2023 Derby?
I had a good horse with a great mind under me. It was a group effort at home, keeping him tuned up and hauling him to season him more between the Futurity and the Derby. My brother Will showed him at CMSA events between the futurity and Derby, and my mom rode him at home, keeping him in shape and tuned up to do slow work at home. I knew that Seven could win the Derby and was excited to get to rerun him. I rode him in the main match and the Derby, and he handled the pressure great.
What advice would you give to future competitors?
It helps to go into the arena on a horse that you are confident in. My advice to future competitors is to find one who is willing and has a sound mind and a big heart when looking for that prospect. Seven may not have been the biggest or the tallest in the pen, but his heart is enormous.
